ENGIE begins implementation of the Asa Branca Transmission System
The largest 100% renewable energy company in Brazil, ENGIE has begun work on the Asa Branca Transmission System which will transect the states of Bahia, Minas Gerais and Espírito Santo, consisting of approximately 1,000 kilometers of transmission line and the expansion of five associated substations. The project is the outcome to the Company’s successful bid for the transmission line concession in a National Electric Energy Agency (Aneel) auction held in June 2023.
For ENGIE Brasil Energia’s Chief Executive Officer, Eduardo Sattamini, this is a project milestone to be commemorated. “Starting construction on schedule is reflection of the commitment of our teams, demonstrating our operational efficiency and ensuring compliance with commitments made, control of costs and the satisfaction of our shareholders,” he says. The Asa Branca Transmission System will strengthen the National Interconnected System, avoiding overloads and undervoltage in existing transmission lines, reinforcing the interconnection between the Northeast and Southeast for the flow of energy from renewable sources.
The implementation of the Asa Branca Transmission System, which carries a DUP (Public Utility Declaration) classification, is being executed on the basis of licenses and authorizations issued via an environmental licensing process by INEMA (Bahia’s Institute of the Environment and Water Resources) and IBAMA (Brazilian Institute of the Environment and Renewable Natural Resources).
Strengthening of the interconnection between the Northeast and Southeast
Work has begun in the state of Bahia for the implementation of the section between the Morro Chapéu II and Poções III substations, the installation license for which was issued by INEMA. This section covers 19 municipal districts and consists of the implementation of a 500kV transmission line, 334 kilometers in length, as well as the expansion of two associated substations. Work on this stretch is expected to create approximately 2000 direct jobs in the region.
During the implementation of the Asa Branca Transmission System, several programs and plans will be developed involving socio-environmental management. “ENGIE’s projects are executed with a high standard of quality, occupational health, and safety together with socio-environmental responsibility, in this way seeking to avoid, mitigate and offset eventual impacts of the work on the environment and the local communities. In addition, these projects generate employment and income for the local communities themselves”, declares Chief Implementation Officer at ENGIE Brasil Energia, Paulo Henrique Muller.
ENGIE already operates more than 2.7 thousand kilometers of line and 6 proprietary substations with the Novo Estado (between Pará and Tocantins), Gralha Azul, (in the state of Paraná) and Gavião Real (in the state of Pará) transmission systems. And most recently, EBE made a successful bid at an Aneel auction for the concession to implement and operate more than 780 kilometers of transmission line and two substations in the states of Santa Catarina, Paraná, Minas Gerais, São Paulo and Espírito Santo.
